If you a songwriter or a publisher wondering how to collect royalties for public performance of your original works, you should sign up with a "Performance Rights Organization". These folks will track and collect your royalties for you and send you money earned for things such as radio airplay, use of your music in televison or commercials, and any other public performance of your music. Most countries have their own societies, but I cannot list them all here. There are four societies in North America, and you can click on each one below for more information. Each one is slightly different, so do your research to determine which one is best for your needs. The Canadian society is called SOCAN, and there are three different ones in the USA. They are ASCAP, BMI and SESAC.

The "Radio for Independent Artists of America Foundation" Unlimited
Internet broadcasters are looking for independent music to play. Unfortunately, hundreds of broadcasters are shutting down due to sky high royalty rates instigated by RIAA (Recording Industry Association).
Currently the only way webcasters can survive the new RIAA sponsored legislation is to find independent artists who can give broadcasters permission to play their music royalty free.
The "Radio for Independent Artists of America Foundation Unlimited" (RIAAFU) is a new website which is simply a searchable database designed to match internet broadcasters with independent artists who wish to have their music broadcast. When you register as an artist or record label your contact information will be added to the database so broadcasters can find you, and you are welcome to search for broadcasters.
This is not a commercial site, and if you register, there are no obligations legal or otherwise. It just shows that you are interested in finding broadcasters to play your music.
Please support this cause by registering at www.riaafu.com, writing your representatives, and spreading the word.

I've been presenting a programme of country music on our local hospital radio station for over six years. I was wondering if I could be included on your mailing list for promotional cds ? Many of the companies here in the UK feel that hospital radio does'nt have a big enough audience to justify supplying us with promotional copies. This is a great pity, as here in Inverness alone, we broadcast to three different hospitals, and could have an audience of 2,000 or more. All the presenters, and other helpers give their time freely, and we get no expenses, or any other payment whatsoever. Presenters like myself who do specialist programmes rely on our own initiative to supply the music for our programmes, as the studio library isn't up to much. With the goal of increasing awareness of guitar playing as a profession, the Association looks to promote learning and education, while at the same time encouraging it’s members to sincerely enjoy the magic a guitar brings.
Based in Lion’s Head, Ontario, the flagship of the organization is it’s web site. From there, a person can join the Association free of charge, find guitar related computer software, connect with other players on an interactive message board and enjoy a host of other features. A unique service is the ability for members to upload their own performances and listen to member’s music on the Association’s own streaming Internet Radio Station.
The benefits of joining the Canadian Guitar Player’s Association are many. They include a sense of community with a united voice for national issues affecting guitar players and recognition as devoted guitar players. You can even attend the annual outdoor jam. The Director of Education, Gregg Paterson, is working on a set of guidelines for an acceptable standard in guitar playing. This standard will be easy to obtain and be denoted with a P.Gr. (Professional Guitarist) designation.
The Association is young but the vision is vast. Future additions are always being developed and membership is growing. The Canadian Guitar Player’s Association is a non-profit organization, established in Lion’s Head, Ontario 2001.

Our mandate is simple - to educate and inform both the hardcore and casual blues fan about the Canadian blues scene. It is for the fans, musicians, industry people, and the individuals who work behind the scenes. The launch of the site was May 25, 2002. Baron Bedesky is a professional writer and Andie Maranda is a graphic and web designer. We have been busy for the last few months researching the material that will make up the site. A temporary site has been set up to inform musicians and industry people of our plans. Numerous forms have been set-up to help gather the information we need to make this site as comprehensive as possible.
